Helms Bakery

Published by allinthefamily at 2:55 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

Does anyone out there remember Helm’s Bakery? I can remember the Helm’s Bakery truck coming into our neighborhood. It was full of delicious donuts, cookies, cakes, bread, and my favorite, caramel apples with nuts on top. I also remember the long wood drawers that the Helm’s man would open up in the his truck with all the goodies in them. The glazed donuts were another one of my favorites. They were huge! I don’t think I ever ate a glazed donut that was better. When I was born, my Father worked for Helm’s Bakery as a baker. He told me that this was his first real job. He wanted to marry my Mother and didn’t really have a steady job. He got the job at Helm’s when he was 19 years old, married my Mother and they had me when they were both 20 years old. My Father had told me about the first few days at his new job at Helm’s. He had to make massive amounts of dough in a very big machine. He screwed up and he said there was dough everywhere. I went on the web and found a website about Helm’s Bakery. It is pretty interesting reading. Here it is: http://www.culvercity.org/info/bakeries.asp?sec=res
